Buying a GPS system for your car can be an expensive proposition depending upon the type of GPS system you require. Selecting the best GPS can be a challenge, given the countless models and its amenities to choose from. With the increase in number of smartphones every year, the decision on choosing the dedicated app or navigation device can be even tougher; so, here’s some help!

What to Look For?

Most of the owners get attracted towards the GPS tracker so that they would be aware of their car’s positioning. It is perhaps the best way to monitor and trace the exact place of any vehicle. You just have to install a small tool in your vehicle that acts as a data mapping control. Global positing system (GPS) works under the supervision of satellite and sends all the information back to server through which you can also see complete information on the internet. It offers exact tracking of the car and it is quite easy to install too. GPS tracking system sets the tool to feed the data and send it to the server of the device’s supplier and shows the final data to you, before resetting.

There are 2 modes of tracing: passive and active; if you want data to display continuously on the phone, active mode is best for you. There are different types of GPS trackers, including marine system, PDA/GPS system, handheld outdoor, and navigation system. The marine tracer helps you to locate fishes in the water, while navigation helps to locate the exact position of your vehicle. The portable and compact GPS tracking systems are easy to install and can be operated easily, without facing much difficulties.

In order to purchase the correct GPS tracker, you must ensure that the device is reliable. If it is not reliable, you’ll have to face problems instead of locating your vehicle.

Many GPS systems come with various types of functions that aren’t useful to you and hence you should look for its specifications too. There are many online sites that supply GPS system and many companies that offer varieties of devices in different models too. Just try to buy the GPS tracking system from an authorized dealer to assist you with installation, maintenance, and any other queries you may have.

Determine Your Needs

Convert GPS vehicle trackers that are commonly used among private investigators and law enforcement; however, some employers and parents use it to track their employees and children respectively. The personal style GPS tracking system doesn’t need external battery pack, unlike Convert GPS and can be charged every few days. It is less expensive and more reliable for personal use.

It also depends upon how often you use it to track the location; GPS device when used with tracing software is capable of sending reports in intervals from every minute to hours in real time. The frequency and speed of tracking greatly influences the price of the device. By establishing your tracking pattern, you’ll have to select the device that meets your specific needs.

Deciding Upon the Budget

Choose a GPS tracker and optional features, such as FM transmitter, Bluetooth technology, and traffic routing feature that you can afford; decide on how much money you would like to spend on your GPS. Since there are many GPS models available in the market, the prices too vary a great deal and you must set your budget and stick to it, rather than exceeding it for a bunch of features that you’ll never even make use of!

The bottom-line is that you should shortlist your requirements and then pick a GPS model that fits your bill.

Even if you’ve ever been super late to work or to pick up the kids, more than likely you’ve never had the urge to dart through residential 30 mph streets at 100 mph, or reach speeds of 205 mph on highways marked with 75 mph speed limits. Those types of speeds are becoming more and more out of reach anyway, thanks to a modern devise called the speed limiter.

What is a Speed Limiter?

Speed limiters, also called "governors," are found on most modern vehicles, especially with fuel-injection systems. These devices simply limit the top speeds of a vehicle. Though some jurisdictions require that they be used under statutory laws, many auto manufactures provide a system that can be programmed by the driver. Speed limiters use sensors to detect how fast the vehicle is going, which then communicates this information to a computer that controls the engine's functions. Once the pre-determined speed limit is reached, the flow of fuel and air to the engine is restricted by the computer, which prevents the driver from exceeding the pre-set speed limit.

How Effective is It?

In spite of much criticism against the evasiveness of these devices, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) released recent research to the public that confirms the safety benefits of this technology. The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, which partnered with the American Transportation Research Institute, conducted a multiple analysis study that found profound safety benefits for trucks that were equipped with active speed limiters.

The primary study concentrated on the potential reduction in vehicular accidents that could have been either prevented or mitigated with the installation of an active speed limiter device. The study represented a wide range of truck crashes - from minor to fatal - and was the only study that used an actual collection of truck crash data directly from fleets "in the field." The analysis included data from more than 130,000 trucks and an analysis of approximately 15,000 crashes, which was collected over a period that covered 2007-2009. Of all crashes involving large trucks, 22.9 percent were speed related, with 10.4 percent of speed related crashes attributed to passenger vehicles.

Details of the FMCSA Study

The report indicates that the speed limiter crash assessment utilized four types of information included in the dataset study: the location of the crash (i.e. type of road and speed limit involved); the specific crash type (i.e. front, rear, side, etc.); contributing factor(s) involved (i.e. weather-related, mechanical failure, etc.); and a crash narrative.

The rate of speed limiter-relevant crashes (crashes directly contributed to by the vehicle's speed) for trucks with speed limiters was 1.4 for every one hundred trucks per year, compared to five crashes for every one hundred trucks per year without speed limiters. The overall (either directly or non-directly related) crash rate was similar, with 11 crashes for every one hundred trucks with speed limiters per year versus 16.4 crashes for every one hundred trucks per year without them.

Overall Relevancy of the Study

The report estimates that a range from about sixty to eighty percent of truck fleets use speed limiters. Organizations like the American Trucking Associations (ATA) want that number to increase with stricter regulation. The ATA is one of the organizations that has been the most vocal in support of the devices, stating that speed is a primary factor in vehicular deaths, especially with large trucks, and that the most effective deterrent is to slow them down.

The study set out to silence the critics against this technology, and confirm that their complaints were unfounded with hard data. The ATA and the Truckload Carriers Association, along with other safety advocates, are all pushing for tougher regulation requirements for speed limiters on all commercial trucks, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states that it plans to have a legislative proposal delivered to the Office of the Secretary of Transportation as soon as possible, which should bolster their pleas.

In recent years, vehicle tracking has not only become popular for businesses with fleet vehicles, it has also become more widespread in the domestic market too. In this article, we will look more closely at the benefits of installing avg vehicle tracking systems to your average family car as well as highlighting a few of the advantages vehicle tracking can bring to one's business.

Recovering your Vehicle

One of the most significant benefits of having a tracker installed in your car is that in the event it is stolen it can be located immediately. The information the tracker provides can be handed directly to the police and there is a high probability the vehicle will be recovered. Indeed, one popular tracking manufacturer claims that, in 2011, over £7.5 million worth of stolen cars were recovered and 64 arrests made due to their tracking system.

Save on your Insurance

The fact that stolen vehicles are much more likely to be recovered if they are fitted with a tracking device is also of benefit to the driver when it comes to their insurance premiums. Besides, because tracking devices can determine how safe a driver you are (by logging speed, braking and acceleration) drivers who can prove to insurance companies that they fit the required criteria will also be rewarded with lower premiums. Indeed, over 65% of drivers with such tracking devices see their insurance premiums reduced by at least 20%.

Keeping track of your Kids

It may seem slightly over the top, but tracking devices are a good way of monitoring where people using a car are and how they are driving. For example, a father may lend his daughter a car with strict instructions not to speed or go out of a certain area. The average vehicle tracking device will allow the father to ensure his daughter follows his rules. Indeed, a tracking system actually led to one British father rescuing his daughter from kidnappers. He tracked his daughter's vehicle movements and become concerned when he saw she was heading out of town when she should be coming home. He alerted the authorities who stopped the car and saved his daughter.

Safety

Having a tracking device fitted to your car not only helps if the car is stolen but is vital in case of a breakdown. A tracked car can easily be located by a recovery truck. Should you be on your own and in a remote location, a tracking device in your car could certainly prove to be quite a blessing!

Cutting Costs in the Business World

The impact of vehicle tracking devices on the business world has been significant. Those companies with a fleet of vehicles can see their costs reduced dramatically. For example, in 2011, one UK based delivery company with over 50 vehicles had trackers installed into all their vans. The company was then able to give better estimated times of arrival to its customers as they could locate each vehicle and plan its route. Drivers realized they were being watched so did not speed or try to take longer routes to gain overtime payments. These changes may seem slight, but the company's fuel bill was subsequently reduced by over 30%. Furthermore, the vehicles in question only did around 8 miles to the gallon, so this amounted to big savings indeed, with the fuel saving alone paying for the initial installation of the tracking devices.

Nissan has announced that the 2013 Altima will feature NASA inspired seats to provide drivers and their passengers with the ultimate in riding comfort. Although everyone knows the NASA name, the incorporation of a seat inspired by NASA has left a lot of consumers wondering exactly what that actually means.

What is the Science behind NASA Seats?

NASA has done a lot of research on the impact that zero gravity conditions have on the human body. Thanks to NASA's research, both scientists and developers are aware of exactly what the human body's neutral posture is. The phrase neutral posture refers to the position that the human body naturally takes when there are no other outside forces acting upon it. In other words, neutral posture is the most comfortable and healthy posture that a person can utilize, but most chairs and car seats ignore this important factor.

What exactly is Neutral Posture?

Nissan decided to take NASA's statistics regarding neutral posture and develop seats based on this information. According to NASA, the human body rests most naturally when the trunk to thigh region is at a 128 degree angle. This causes the spine to form a curve resembling an S, and it also makes the lower lumber curve in slightly and the thoracic region curve out slightly. A person sitting in a neutral posture will also have their elbows bent at a 90 degree angle, and their knees will be bent as well.

The Advantage of NASA Seats

By providing consumers with these NASA inspired seats, Nissan is enabling drivers and passengers to have a much more comfortable riding experience. Sitting in the perfect neutral posture state has a positive impact on a person's overall health. For example, these seats will naturally improve the blood flow of anyone who is sitting in them by reducing pressure points. This is especially helpful for drivers who have long daily commutes as it will dramatically decrease the back pain issues that most drivers experience when they are constantly on the road. Other perks of sitting in the neutral posture include improved digestion and better breathing.

How did Nissan Develop These Seats?

Having a firm understanding of neutral posture does not necessarily equate to being able to make the perfect car seat. Nissan is the first car manufacturer to attempt to place a NASA inspired seat on the market, and this is likely due to the intense testing process that Nissan's developers undertook to design these seats. During the design phase, Nissan's engineers utilized a seat simulator to test out the neutral sitting position of an individual from 14 different spots on the seat back, ranging from the upper back to the pelvis. Nissan's engineers began this process back in 2006, and they continued running tests and making adjustments until they landed on the desired results.

Will a NASA-Inspired Seat Help Me?

If you have issues with your back due to driving, then you should definitely check out the 2013 Nissan Altima. Although it is impossible to state that these NASA inspired neutral position seats will be the perfect fit for everyone, several years of testing has gone into ensuring a seat that outperforms traditional car seats. Individuals who do a lot of driving on a regular basis will benefit the most from investing in a 2013 Nissan Altima, but all drivers and front seat passengers will notice the physical difference that is associated with sitting in these neutral posture seats.

New cars typically include a multitude of high tech gadgets, and it is rare to find a new car without a touch screen, hands-free device, or remote start. However, it is possible to enjoy the latest technology without having to purchase the top of the line model of the newest car on the market. Retailers are offering more and more car gadgets for purchase after-market, allowing the used car owner to become equally spoiled as the new car owner. Are these after-market installations just as reliable and worth the extra out-of-pocket costs as the factory installations?

Global Positioning Systems (GPS)

GPS Navigation is very popular today, and can be found in many new cars. Unlike other car gadgets, GPS systems were first invented as a car accessory, before car makers decided to include them in upper-end models. The actual technology included in after-market vs. market styles of GPS systems is the same--all GPS systems rely on satellite technology, and all have the pitfall of needing occasional updates. No system is 100% reliable—all may fail if there is interference with the satellite system or without proper updates.

Perhaps the biggest difference in the after-market vs. market GPS system would be the cost involved. After-market GPS systems retail for an average of $150, with some basic models available for as little as $99. Most car manufacturers only install GPS systems in high-end models of new cars. Jumping from a basic model to a high-end model that includes a touch screen GPS could mean a difference of thousands in a new car price.

Internet Radio

Another trend in car technology is internet radio streaming. High-end car models that include factory GPS touch screens typically offer this service; however, the after-market equivalent is now available for purchase.

Retailing at $120, Livio is offering an internet car radio kit that easily installs to any car with a 12-volt power outlet. The device must be plugged in at all times and requires the use of a smartphone to stream the music through the car’s sound system. Although the price may be tempting, there are obvious flaws in this product as it relies on a smartphone for the internet connection. The program actually runs through a smartphone app, and will limit users to streaming music only from Pandora radio.

Remote Car Starters

First introduced over a decade ago, remote car starters are still popular, mostly for the advantage of a warm car in the winter months. Factory-installed remote starts are available in an increasing number of models, making after-market models a bit less popular. Remote car starters are usually easy to install and many retailers offer free installation with purchase.  Basic remote starts retail for around $200, while high-end models including smartphone app starts and timed starts may retail for as much as $500.

Anti-theft

Anti-theft devices are factory installed in the majority of vehicles with remote entry systems, but after-market models are also available for purchase and installation. After-market models typically offer more options such as: smartphone controls, remote start, and even links to home security systems. Relatively inexpensive at an average of $250, these systems can really upgrade your car’s security compared to the basic, factory-installed anti-theft system.

It is tempting to run out and purchase every car gadget on the market to make your car a technology-laden chariot. However, not all gadgets are worth the money and time of after-market installation. It’s always best to carefully research every technology purchase to be certain your money is well spent.

When it comes to tech for your car, there’s quite a lot of jargon out there. Which is a shame, because people are getting confused and missing out on some great kit. While most modern cars have basic features like a radio and CD player, electric windows and air conditioning, adding some extra equipment can be a really cost effective way of improving your driving experience without having to buy a more expensive model.

Car Audio

For some reason, a lot of cars come with a pretty poor stereo system. Luckily though, it’s one of the simplest things to change, and often a fairly cheap after-market version will give better sound quality. That’s if you can get your head around all the acronyms. Here’s a quick rundown of some common phrases and what they mean:

  • Aftermarket – Something you buy for your car after you’ve bought the car itself, for example when you want to change the stereo for another one.
  • DIN – Car stereos, MP3 players and other gadgets basically come in one of two sizes, single DIN (180 x 50 mm) and double DIN (180 x 100 mm). Single DIN units can be fitted in pretty much any vehicle and are usually cheaper, while double DIN devices often have extra features such as large screens, Sat Nav and video playback.
  • Head unit – This is the part of the music system that most of us simply refer to as the ‘radio’, i.e. the part that slots into the dashboard. A lot of modern head units have an array of features in addition to the basic stereo, though, including the ability to read MP3 files from a CD, an iPod or a USB stick.
  • HD radio – Not High Definition radio as many people think, but Hybrid Digital. Digital radio can give a better quality and more robust signal than analogue, but not many stations are using it (yet). If you want digital radio in your car, satellite might be a better choice, although you’ll have to pay for it.

It’s worth noting that some radios can be set up so your steering wheel controls still work, and you might need some additional cabling to fit everything correctly (such as an ISO adapter or ‘harness’). Most suppliers will tell you exactly what you need though, and you could always get a garage to fit it if you’re uncertain. There’s no need to worry about your new radio not looking right in your car – you can get panels or fascia adapters that go around the edge for a seamless finish.

Hands Free

If you want to stay in touch while driving safely, hands free kits are a must, especially if you live in a state with more restrictive distracted driving laws. Most work via Bluetooth, and some come with a screen so you can easily see who’s calling before you pick up. You can also get kits that go with a specific brand of car or model of cell phone to make use of the technology you’ve already got.

Sat Nav and GPS

Another virtual necessity, especially if you drive alone a lot and have no one to read a map for you, is a Sat Nav or GPS. Some can be built into double DIN radios, but you can also buy separate units that attach to the window or dash. They’re available with various screen sizes, and there are versions which take account of local traffic conditions to give you the quickest route.

The Acura brand of cars are a luxury sub-division of the more popular Honda Company and typically all Acura models come with GPS as standard.  The Acura Navigation System is powered with Navteq maps and is very similar in use to the standalone Garmin devices.  When you boot the Acura GPS up it displays a rather boring Acura logo.  This article from GPS Bites shows you how you can customize your start-up screen to show a different image.

Start the GPS and Find Your .BIN Number

Start your car’s engine up – this will initialize the Acura Navigation System.  When the blue screen first appears you will need to press and hold the following buttons in order to gain access to the serial number of the device.  Press the following keys all at the same time for 4 seconds:

  • Map > Guide > Menu > Cancel

This should now show you a new screen which has a button on it titled “version”.  Press that button and the touch screen should show a number that is formatted similarly to: BNH24214.BIN.  Make sure you write it down and then eject the Acura Navigation DVD that contains the software from the disc drive.

Copy the Acura Navigation DVD Files to Your PC

Go to your PC and insert the Acura Navigation DVD.  Browse through it and copy all the files to a place somewhere on your hard drive.  Explore the disc until you find a folder containing files ending with the .BIN extension.  Find the one that matches your serial number which you noted down earlier and open it up in notepad.  Within the first few lines of code that you see there will be a JPEG file referenced.  This is your start up screen.

Edit the Start Up Screen JPEG with Your Customized Graphic

Open the JPEG up in an application like Photoshop.  You can now edit this file (or create a new one as long as it’s in the same dimensions).  You might want to change it to a different logo or perhaps a favorite photo that you have.  Once you are happy with your changes you will need to save the file as the same JPEG name as the original.

Burn the New Acura Navigation DVD and Re-Install

Now on your hard drive you will have a copy of the Acura Navigation DVD, but this time it has a customized loading start-up screen bundled with it.  Now you will need to burn the entire set of files that you copied earlier to a new blank DVD.  Once you have done this you can re-install the Acura Navigation DVD back into your car – and it will now show your very own start up screen rather than the existing Acura logo one!

Use an Acura Navigation Promotion Code to Save Money

The 2012 Mercedes Navigation System Update

The Mercedes-Benz brand of motor vehicle and cars are renowned for being one of the best quality car badges in the country.  Their cars come with lots of hi tech functions and optional extras that have been developed in order to give the driver a superb driving experience with comfort and style.  One of the more useful aspects to this range of car is the Mercedes Navigation System.  This offers GPS navigation at the touch of a button, all of which is embedded into the dashboard and run using Navteq digital maps.

The Mercedes GPS devices are known to be reliable, accurate and easy to use due to the large touch screen display.  However, there is a downside which is the fact that the driver will need to update the Mercedes GPS maps in order to keep them up to date and current with new road changes.  The following article shows you how to do that and why (please note: more comprehensive information can be found on this Mercedes Navigation System Update website).

New Mercedes-Benz GPS Map Updates from Navteq

Mercedes GPS maps are provided by Navteq.  You will need to visit their website in order to purchase new routes and directions for your car’s dashboard GPS.  New maps for this brand come on a Mercedes-Benz Navigation DVD for 2012.  On the Navteq website you need to select your Mercedes model and year, and then add the latest 2012 DVD to your shopping cart.  Once you have purchased yours online this is how you install Mercedes Navigation System Updates - your new Mercedes DVD should arrive within 7 working days.

  1. Locate the disc drive for your Mercedes Navigation System.  Typically this is located underneath the display on the dashboard, but on some older generation models from 2001 and 2002 this could be hidden under the driver’s seat.
  2. Eject the existing 2011 Mercedes Navigation DVD and insert your new 2012 disc.
  3. The display console will recognize the DVD and should display a message asking you whether you want to “update maps”.  Click “yes” to continue.
  4. The Mercedes Navigation System Update should now start automatically, with the new software loading.  The last thing you will need to do in order to get started will be to type in your serial number which is on the DVD packaging.

Please note, you should never turn the Mercedes GPS off during the install and this has been known to corrupt the software.  In extreme cases you might need to take the car to an official dealer and engineer to fix any problems that could occur.

Why Update Your Mercedes Navigation System?

Drivers that have up to date GPS maps are more likely to use less fuel.  This is because their GPS is less prone to making errors and so gas savings can be made.  This also has the knock-on effect of reducing a driver’s carbon footprint.  The US Road Network sometimes has up to 20,000 new miles of roads added each year – none of which will be on an out of date Mercedes-Benz Navigation System.
